Guest post by Rachel E. Beattie, Secretary for our newest student chapter, University of Toronto.
We are happy to announce the official launch of the AMIA student chapter at University of Toronto! The chapter is based at the Faculty of Information (iSchool) at University of Toronto and is the first AMIA student chapter in Ontario, Canada.
The chapter brings together a diverse community of students, educators, and information professionals with vested interest in the past, present, and future of moving image archives. By establishing the chapter, we are seeking to provide a forum for the discussion of moving image heritage and to bring the Toronto moving image heritage community closer to the wider AMIA family.
The chapter was formed in the winter of 2015 and we are already off to a great start! Our first event was an archival film screening organized in collaboration with the University of Toronto Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) student chapter and was hosted by the Media Commons Archive at University of Toronto. In addition to that, we organized several social activities like pub nights and movie nights.
We are planning many more events for the upcoming 2015-16 academic year. We intend to organize tours of local institutions, panels with professionals and scholars working in the field, workshops on various aspects of moving image archiving and preservation, and of course, many more social activities.
Through these efforts, we hope to raise awareness of the significance of moving image archives in the wider cultural and documentary heritage sphere and to become leading advocates of AMIA’s values in Canada. To this end, we are actively seeking to collaborate with other student organizations as well as commercial and non-profit cultural institutions in Canada.
We aim to have a vibrant social media presence where we will promote the events that we organize and also other relevant moving image events in Toronto.
We’d love to hear from anyone in the AMIA community – current and past student chapter members—or anyone else interested in moving image archives. If you have suggestions for events or just want to get in touch, please email us at email@example.com. You can find out about our past and upcoming events at our website here: https://amiaatuoft.wordpress.com/ and you can also follow us on twitter at: @AMIAatUofT
We are looking forward to hearing from you and we hope that we can jointly work to promote our field!
All the best,
